Expecting the unexpected while travelling in Trump country: Samosas and Maple Syrup | Toronto Star

When travelling with children, my advice is: don't. I love my kids, ages 11 and 9, and they're mostly civilized and sweet. But being cooped up with them in small hotel rooms and rental cars is a recipe for cranky sibling bickering and parent-led peace talks.

How do I explain the so-called 'Muslim ban' to my kids?: Samosas and Maple Syrup | Toronto Star

When I first heard about President Donald Trump's shiny new executive order to temporarily ban people from seven mostly Muslim countries from entering the U.S., my first thought was: how am I going to explain this to my kids? I remember the morning after the U.S election.

    The 'Samosas and Maple Syrup' column began running regularly in the Toronto Star in September 2015. However, my very first column appeared earlier, in January 2015 ... when I gave my 7 year old son The Talk.
